IT ONLY TAKES A GIRL

In developing nations around the world today, women and girls are suffering from gross humans rights violations--such as rape as an instrument of war, child marriages, so-called "honor killings", and bride-burnings--and they are denied education and adequate health care. These injustices do not just affect women.

As New York Times journalist Nick Kristof says in his book Half the Sky, "sex trafficking and mass rape should no more be seen as women's issues than slavery was a black issue or the Holocaust was a Jewish issue. These are all humanitarian concerns, transcending any one race, gender, or creed."

Educating girls in the developing world is the surest and fastest way to slow population growth, stimulate the economy, and even preserve the environment. Invest in just one girl today, and you are investing in the future of all humankind..Read More...

THE GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH

In the broad expanse of the northern Pacific Ocean, there exists the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, a slowly moving, clockwise spiral of currents created by a high-pressure system of air currents. The area is an oceanic desert, filled with tiny phytoplankton but few big fish or mammals. Due to its lack of large fish and gentle breezes, fishermen and sailors rarely travel through the gyre. But the area is filled with something besides plankton: trash, millions of pounds of it, most of it plastic. It's the largest landfill in the world, and it floats in the middle of the ocean.

Algalita Marine Research Foundation

Charles Moore founded Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF) in 1994 to focus on the “coastal ocean", specifically on the restoration of disappearing giant kelp forests and the improvement of water quality through the preservation and re-construction of wetlands along the California coast.

In 1997, his focus dramatically changed. While returning to California from Hawaii aboard his 50-foot catamaran, the Alguita, he chose to chart a course through the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. This area of the Pacific is a circulating rotation of ocean currents and is normally avoided by sailors due to its light winds. Read more

 Drop In The Bucket

Rollins shot the video above on a recent trip to Sudan to show how easy it is to radically change a child's life for the better. The video shows how Drop In The Bucket's innovative eco-sanitation systems build on existing technology to help deliver clean water to schools — all while kids play on the playground.

But as Rollins points out, Drop In The Bucket's work is about more than just giving kids a place to get a drink between classes. The changes they usher in are nothing short of revolutionary. Read More..
